Mechanical Properties of PE and PVC Pipes
Both theoretical analysis and practical experience demonstrate that the MRS coefficient of PVC is significantly higher than that of PE. In other words, PVC offers greater long-term strength. As a result, for a 75mm pipe, the PVC version has a much thinner wall compared to its PE counterpart. The reason is simple: at room temperature, the strength and long-term strength of PE materials fall short of those of PVC. Consequently, PE pipes need thicker walls to enhance their strength. If the wall thickness remains the same, PE pipes won’t meet the required strength standards. When the pipe diameters are equal, PVC pipes can carry a larger volume of water than PE pipes. Conversely, to achieve the same water transport capacity, you’ll need a larger-diameter PE pipe, which increases costs. Evidently, the high strength and rigidity of PVC make it an ideal choice for water supply pipes due to its economic advantages.
PVC, as a polar macromolecule, exhibits greater stability than PE and certain small molecules. Hence, it is more resistant to environmental factors. Moreover, with the advent of polymers like cross-linked vinyl chloride, PE’s performance in this regard is set to improve.
At normal temperatures, PVC surpasses PE in both short-term and long-term strength.
