In an environment full of oily substances.
Nitrile rubber has strong polar groups in its molecules, so it has good tolerance to gasoline and some fatty hydrocarbon oils, can transport these materials well and is not easy to age. EPDM is a kind of non-polar rubber. For gasoline and diesel oil, which are also non-polar, they will dissolve or react with each other. In summary, if used in an oil environment, nitrile rubber will be more resistant to aging than EPDM.
In a general environment.
In the general case where there is no corrosion on the hose, the oxidation reaction of the rubber is the most important reason for its aging. Analysis of the molecular structure of both of them shows that: nitrile rubber contains point unsaturated double bonds, but EPDM rubber molecules basically do not contain saturated double bonds. Unsaturated double bonds are unstable and easily react with oxidizing substances to change their properties. Oxygen, especially ozone, is a highly oxidizing substance. Therefore, in general environment, EPDM rubber has more powerful anti-aging properties than nitrile rubber.
